The ferryman had stopped announcing the last crossing years ago. Anyone who needed it knew; anyone who didn't wasn't his problem. He stood at the stern with his coffee going cold, watching the town's lights arrange themselves on the water like something patient and unfinished.
Tonight there was one passenger — a woman with a suitcase that was clearly empty, the way it swung. She didn't look back at the town, which he respected. Most of them looked back.
"Rough out there?" she asked.
"No," he said, which was true of the water and not much else.
She nodded as if he'd said something wiser, and the ferry pulled out into the dark, carrying its two experts in leaving quietly.
